Andrew Fogel (Purdue University) traces the reception of the Superman comic strip sequence about Japanese internment camps to examine how Orientalizing Asian peoples during WWII allowed American Jews in the superhero industry to simultaneously leverage their whiteness and express their wartime patriotism. Focusing on The White Donkey: Terminal Lance by U.S. Marine Maximilian Uriarte, Myra Tatum Salcedo (University of Texas Permian Basin), Amanda Salcedo (University of Texas Permian Basin), and Jose Luis Tarango (University of Texas Permian Basin) examine how the “unseen” in gutters enables post-deployment combat veterans to negotiate unseen wounds.
